“Debut” is a Swedish-language short film following an up and coming director/playwright through the stressful lead up to the debut of her not-so-promising first play. The film’s director needed the score to help induce a feeling of raw anxiety in the audience that would be ever-present and constantly contorting to mirror our protagonist’s experience. I constructed two “halves” of the stress source, one internal and one external, and used that idea to portray her self-criticism through distant orchestral drums and droning synths, while the stressors of her surroundings were exacerbated by hard jazz drumming, growling harps, and a crying trumpet.
